I recieved this palette in my Boxycharm this month. I have wanted to try this brand’s eyeshadows for awhile now. But while they are cute; I don’t really like the gimmicky bird cage layout/weird inconsistent pan size. I decided against a palette previously because I thought it would drive me crazy if I ever eventually depotted it. I was pleasantly surprised when I recieved this, until I opened it. But, I tried to keep an open mind.
The color story is primarily very dark grey/taupe shades. I know everywhere people complain about “too many warm palettes” but let’s be real; cool palettes are hard to pull off. Especially without looking incredibly dated. This reminds me of what was popular when I was in high school/college (It would have been amazing for “racoon” scene queen styled makeup or a Ladytron show. Ha.) This is along the same lines as UD Naked Original and UD Naked Smokey but cooler than both. It is also worth noting both of those palettes are now discontinued. The eyeshadow quality IMO is better, softer, more buttery. Even budget eyeshadows have come a long way since the Naked palettes were launched though. I have tried most shades and they aren’t as “stiff” as an UD mattes but they can still really stick in one spot and take work to blend out.
It’s hard to say if age is a factor here (I’m 33.) I have tried different looks with this palette, probably half a dozen times. I always feel like it makes me look really tired? Again, maybe it’s too dated on me and would work better for someone younger.
All that said, if you pulled from another palette and you are already lacking basic shades in your collection; the Nightengale palette could be more versatile for you. I have an insane amount of make up and am judging this as a stand alone palette. As a stand alone purchase, I would pass. Not terrible for a beauty box item though!
Eta: this retails for $35.
