I was disappointed in this after the high praise. It’s just an eyeliner pencil like those from Bare minerals, Stila, Sephora ad nauseam. This goes on creamy but it’s hard to get a fine line. It does wear well over a workday but so do my liquid eyeliners from Japan. And they are $13. Just don’t get the huge throbbing heart over this product. It’s better than average but not the best. I was expecting the best.

I really wish I could say this eyeliner was awful given its high price. However, I regret to say that this is the only eyeliner that so far has not smudged on me for everyday wear, even in humid places! Every other eyeliner I tried has given me raccoon eyes or does not have a lot of lasting power. This however is great to tightline or use on your waterline as it really doesn’t move. It is also smooth and glides on easily. I don’t usually wear it on the top of my eyelid, but the few times that I have, it has held up great as well. The cons are that the tip is not precise since it can’t be sharpened and that it is expensive. In my case, I got what I paid for and this is now the standard by which I will measure other eyeliners for tightlining and waterlining.

I love this shade a lot, as well as EarthQuake (which is a matte version). The updated formula of these Highliners is so good: opaque, creamy and long-lasting.
You don’t need to sharpen these pencils, they’re so easy on the go and you can do so many different looks with them. I am very impressed. You can always see swatches and read more about my personal favourite shades on the blog ( ) but all in all – I would really recommend strating with their mattes first. Those are so fab, they last all day long on your waterline and never cause irriration (I have sensitive eyes). Highly recommend this line.

This is my third gel eye pencil from Marc Jacobs. The first was RoCocoa, which I liked but it wasn’t quite dark enough for me. The second was Blacquer, which was a bit harsh on fair skin for a classic look. Brown Out is by far my favorite color of the three. I have blue eyes and this lovely metallic espresso defines them well; it is darker than RoCocoa but doesn’t overwhelm my complexion as the black one did. However, it does have visible gold shimmer which may be too chunky or glittery for everyone’s taste.
These crayons set quickly. I don’t have problems with this moving around or smudging, but it can fade after a few hours, so I found that I have to reapply in the afternoon. I don’t apply to the top lid; I apply to the bottom lashline and use a different liner (a liquid) on the top.
This removes easily with makeup remover on a Q-tip or cotton round. I use Paula’s Choice Gentle Makeup Remover or Bobbi Brown Instant Long-Wear Makeup Remover and it glides off in seconds. Some people prefer a natural alternative to remove their makeup such as coconut oil.
The formula is not irritating, and as a contact lens wearer with allergies, I really appreciate that.
There is a skinny version of this pencil, but it only comes in two colors: white (for the waterline) and black. This version, with the thicker lead, comes in a rainbow of shades. I tend to stick with black and brown, but there are blues, purples, greens, and ambers as well. The thicker lead creates a soft pencil line rather than the look of a liquid.
Brown Out was out of stock for months and I pounced on it when it returned. It’s a beautiful hue and it is long-wearing. The swivel-up design is portable and convenient. I normally don’t fiddle with the sharpener. The color and formula work so well for me that I would definitely buy again.
Cons? $25 is expensive and the little sharpener included in the handle isn’t that great at creating a sharp point. I still prefer to use a liquid liner or gel liner on my top lashline; this is more of a pencil look and not for a dramatic cat eye. I’m not using it on the waterline (inner rim of the eye) but rather the bottom lashline (just under the rim). Lately I prefer to avoid the inner rim because I wear contacts and eye makeup applied to the waterline sometimes gets onto the lenses.
Barbarella Brown Rock N Kohl by Charlotte Tilbury lasts longer than this, but that one can be a little smudgy, so I only use it for a smoky eye.

This is the only liner that stays on my waterline! Urban Decay 24/7 and MUFE Aqua Eyes both let me down, but this works. It’s $$, but worth it to get results.
Edit: this was my fault, I guess, but in a moment of carelessness I tipped it downward and the stick fell out!!! Not so long-lasting and worth the money when I have to throw away a barely-used product. I have not re-purchased. Don’t think I plan to, as I just can’t afford it.

The first thing I noticed when testing the eyeliner is that the color is very pretty and has a subtle sparkle to it. I had problems applying it as I had to work hard to get the pencil to leave any line on my lids. It is also very difficult to remove with non-oil based makeup removers. For these reasons I do not intend to repurchase it.

I’m not usually a fan of pencil liners, but I like them for travel or when I’m in a hurry–no brush necessary. This Marc Jacobs pencil is the best I’ve ever used. Brown Out is a perfect medium-to-dark brown that’s not too red—a problem with many brown liners of any type–that has a light sprinkling of silver sparkle that sets off the shade nicely and is not overwhelming. Although it’s a twist-up type (in very elegant silver-colored packaging), it maintains a good point–excellent for getting a thin line on the inner corner of the lid. This pencil lays down a skip-free, easy-glide line in one pass that can be smudged or not, as you wish. The wear is incredible–it looks the same all day, through heat, sweat, rain, sleep–throw anything at it and I think it will hold up, yet I had no problem removing it with a biphase remover. This pencil is the top of the line and worth the somewhat pricey investment. I’ve already bought Navy Noir.

Over time, I’ve become more of a gel eyeliner type of girl. It’s a little more forgiving, a little more wiggle room, and it’s a little easier to use than liquid or pencil liners in some cases. However, there are always exceptions and the Marc Jacobs Highliner is mine.
I really adore this pencil eyeliner. It’s very creamy and pigmented and spreads well. Some shades may be a little on the less pigmented or chalkier side (Brown Out is not one of them), but they always stay put. It takes several rounds of makeup remover to get it off my hand, but when I wear it around my eyes, it comes off with my micellar water removal easily yet stays all day without budging or giving the dreaded raccoon eyes. It has lasted 12+ hours before without any signs of fading.
I prefer Brown Out because it helps make my blue eyes pop and it’s less harsh than a black eyeliner. It looks very natural and is wonderful for tightlining. I have sensitive eyes (I wear contacts) and this did not irritate them.
The only downsides to this product are the price (a hefty $25 per 0.01 oz of pencil; compared to UD 24/7 Eyeliner of $20/0.04 oz or MUFE’s Aqua Eyes at $19/0.04 oz) and they can dry out. Don’t make the mistake I had made with mine and lose the cap; it will become dry and unusable that way. While it lasted, it was a great product and I’d definitely repurchase them (though, likely only during the Sephora VIB Sales or any sales on Marc Jacobs Beauty.)

This is my absolute favorite pencil liner on the planet, and I’m gutted that it is so exorbitantly priced, since I know I’ll someday run out of it and have to replace it.
Anyway, this particular shade is every brown-eyed girl’s dream. It’s a gorgeous warm brown with golden bronze shimmer that makes light brown eyes really gleam.
Even on my oily lids, this stuff lasts all day without smudging or migrating to my crease. I do use a primer, but let’s face it, some liners are rubbish and will crease and smudge no matter what you put underneath them. This doesn’t. This could withstand the Exxon Valdez.
The packaging is gorgeous, and the twist-up mechanism feels sturdy and of high quality.
At $25, this stuff is criminally overpriced, and I’m thinking I’ll only splash out for this on days when I’m feeling uber spendy and want to treat myself. However, I’m in the midst of trying to find a passable dupe, and it’s been quite difficult to find something quite as magical as this wonderful liner. I know it’s Marc Jacobs and that name will carry with it a high premium, but ouch.
Overall, a wonderful product despite the high price.

I have oily hooded lids, so eyeliner transferring into my creases during the day is usually expected (it happens to me with Urban Decay’s 24/7 pencils and stila stay-all day liquid liner, both of which seem to work for other people with hooded lids). I splurged on this rather expensive, for me, eyeliner precisely because of reading about how it really stays put (I also had a sephora coupon at the time, which helped), and I have to say, it really does stay put. I am impressed. I don’t have to use primer or anything; it stays on all day only where i applied it in the morning; it’s pretty re-marc-able (sorry, I had to). the color itself is great for me, I have brown hair and wanted something suitable for my job in an office; it’s not super exciting but it has some nice shimmer. I only wish the supposed internal sharpener actually sharpened; I can’t get a very thin line, but for me that’s a moot point because I have hooded lids anyway, haha. It’s not fragranced which is a plus for me, and it applies like a dream – so smooth, right out of the gate. in the winter my bedroom is rather cold, which is where I keep my makeup, so the fact that this glides on without needing to be warmed up is also…remarkable. I would definitely buy other Marc Jacobs eyeliners; I think they’re worth the price, considering their performance and texture.
