I was super excited when DevaCurl came out with this product, as I rushed to buy it right away. All I can say is that a was a huge waste of money for me. It left my hair stripped of all moisture, and had my hair feeling super tangled, and in an absolute state of shock. This stuff truly jacked up my hair till I had to work to actually repair my hair after using it. I only used it once and after that I threw it directly into the garbage. It does do a deep cleansing off ones hair, but or me it is way too drying for use on my curls and waves period.
This honestly is the absolute worst DevaCurl product that I’ve ever tried, And, I honestly wouldn’t recommend it to no one. I’d honestly rather use an actual sulfate free shampoo that this stuff ever touch my hair again.

Everything the reviewer @meyerdani I feel completely the same way! Our hair type seems almost identical, so perhaps that has something to do with why it didn’t work for us? Whatever it is, my hair is greasier, stringier and all around worse AFTER using this product. No idea what the problem is for me, but I am glad I only had a couple free samples and that I didn’t spend money on this.

I rely on this weekly to remove any residue in my fine but giant pile of wavy hair. when you use a no-poo you really need to do this every week or so depending on how much styling product you use. I apply this just like shampoo- I think their applicator tip is deceiving and unnecessary. work it into your hair (its the consistency of a serum) and then rinse followed by your usual deva conditioner.
It helps keep my hair fresh and clean … and I use a lot of product 🙂 it seems gentle as well, and I have sensitive skin and chemically (bleached) hair that is fine but full.
UPDATE: Oct. 2018 – i have stopped using devaCurl completely. i like it but my hair is much shorter now so I don’t need to spend the money on this product anymore.

The packaging looks nice and makes it easy to apply, although this stuff did really dry my hair, I have wavy hair that has been damaged by highlights and heat styling. I have tried every product out there to sort it out, Fekkai, Kerastase, Ouidad, DevaCurl, you name it and I have tried it. All in vain until I found Christophe Robin products, it really changed my hair, my life and boosted my self-esteem, as I had spent more than 500 on Christophe Robin products, yes, they are so amazing that I had to try them all I decided not to buy his deep cleanser as I had a full bottle of this stuff, the DevaCurl build up booster dried my hair straight away, as any other Deva product that I have tried. Luckily I have CR Oil with Lavander and Citrus Cleansing to revert the damage! I will never use any other brand! I will not even try to sell this on eBay as I feel sorry for other women, stay away!!!

I did not like this at all. I’m new to the whole DevaCurl line and first tried the Decadence Cleanser which is really nice so I thought I’d try some more products. Tried the dry shampoo which is the best dry shampoo I’ve used so far (and I’ve tried a lot). Then I decided to try the Buildup Buster. Mixed reviews on here but It seemed to have good reviews on Ulta but I was SO disappointed. This literally made me feel like I had some kind of sticky goop on my scalp after I rinsed and went to blow dry…and I rinsed this stuff WELL. Maybe this works for some, but definitely not for me. Luckily I can return it.

As of right now I would not purchase another bottle because I am still on the fence about this product, I should start off by saying I don’t even have curly hair! LOl or processed hair, or dyed hair. I have slippery dark fine asian/native amiercan hair with a oily scalp. And that is what drew my attention to this product I recetnly moved to Colorado and I noticed the water is a bit harder here then in chicago my native home, I have shampoo meant for specificly oily scalps meant to be used as once a week treatments but as someone who blow drys almost daily with my dry Bar Blow Dryer which I LOVE, and I may or may not curl my hair I find that using my milk serums and also a light frizz fighter/ and then having to use my clarfying shampoo more then once or twice a weak can play havoic on my ends. I have pretty healthy hair, I buy high end and high end drug store hair products I purchased this because I was drawn to the nozzle and the no sulfate shampoo meant to get rid of hard water and other residues. I used this as directed, on wet hair and rinsed really really well I then applied my paul mitchell detangler to the nape of my neck down ward and rinsed it out, so far my scalp feels clean without the hard detergents, I will keep depending on how a once a week usuage goes. I use the following brand shampoos: Seba med regular shampoo, Phyto Paris for Volumizing hair, Klorane for fine hair (the violet colored bottle), Paul Mitchell Tea tree shampoo (when my hair and scalp feel espically icky) and for rinse out conditioners I use Paul Mitchell the detangler and Horse brand conditoner. I also like the Dry Bar Sake Bomb Condtioner if my hair feels very tangled. I know I don’t have curly hair, but the ingridents here are quality and I hope this is helpful if your looking for a option to clean your scalp and hair from product build up and hard water without a shampoo thats very harsh on your actual strands, but tough on the build up on your scalp which I am sure we can all relate too

I really think this stuff is amazing, despite the reviews being quite split thus far. I have 3A/B, porous, dyed and dry hair, and have hard, city water. I’m a certified product junkie, so the build-up buster has some work to do, curl creams, gels, scalp oils, hairspray etc. Impressive. To be fair, I don’t use silicones, so that’s a non-issue, ymmv. This gets my hair wonderfully clean, but keeps it SO soft, and even starts to detangle -which isn’t what it’s for, but hey, nice perk ahead of conditioning! I get a bit more lift at the roots, it’s so clean and light, and my curls are as nice as they can be. Doesn’t cause any frizz- if this were drying or stripping, it would. I honestly think anyone who clarifies could benefit from this- it’s not strictly a wavy/curly/kinky product just because it’s DevaCurl.
It’s 100% meant to be used in wet hair- check Deva’s instructions and their social media, don’t be confused by how you use micellar water on your face. I find it works best using it like a cowash, massaging it into the scalp with your fingers for a minute or two- it isn’t going to lather- and then working it down the length during the rinse. The applicator is meant to apply it to your scalp, but I find this gimmicky and docked lippies- it’s both wasteful, and awkward, so I use my finger for that.
Price- it’s Deva, so it’s not cheap. Harder to find, but if your beauty supply stocks it, there’s a 32 oz bottle that’s more cost effective. I’ll be getting that next, that’s how great this stuff is. Love

I received a deluxe sample of this as a 100 point perk from Sephora, which is great because I wasn’t about to drop major cash on a product that has few reviews and no comparable competition. In short, I like it a lot! The trick is, like micellar water for your face, to use it on DRY hair. You do need to use a lot of product. Massage it in, make sure your hair is fully coated, let it sit for a couple of minutes, and then rinse it out and follow with conditioner/stylers/whatever. I found this product to be surprisingly hydrating, and my hair did feel somewhat lighter than usual once it dried. I don’t have a ton of buildup, so I can’t speak to that, but I certainly felt clean. I’m not sure if I would buy the full size, as I mentioned earlier that I do not generally suffer from buildup, but this is something I’d love to have on hand for travel, especially in places with hard water.

My hair is naturally curly, usually 2C/3A combo in the cooler months, and primarily 3A in more humid weather. I have low porosity hair that has never been color treated. I have only used products free of silicones and harsh sulfates for years at this point. I do struggle with buildup just from having an oilier scalp and probably using too much conditioner, but also because we have very hard water, a softener that just doesn’t keep up, and high iron content despite every iron removing additive in the book.
I have used Malibu’s hard water shampoos and treatments before and while they did work to remove hard water deposits, I also felt like they really stripped my hair.
I picked up this product at my stylist’s recommendation. I used it in lieu of shampoo/no-poo and rinsed thoroughly. My hair did not feel stripped and actually felt like it had been conditioned while I was rinsing it out. I hadn’t washed my hair in two days at this point, so I figured it would be a real test. The scent was a fairly strong floral, and I could faintly smell oils in the product also. It wasn’t unpleasant, but quite potent. I followed with DevaCurl Delight conditioner and my usual styling products/routine. It has been a cooler, low humidity day and my hair seems to be conditioned and shiny, with more curl than I would usually have in this type of weather. It also seems lighter somehow…more natural ringlets than the ones I usually have to really encourage with plopping and clipping.
I usually condition right to my roots and leave it in, but I noticed they look a little over-conditioned. It’s possible this product is much more moisturizing than my usual cleansing products and I may need to condition less aggressively near my scalp.
I think the real test will be in weather my hair usually thrives in… So far though, I’m very pleased. Anything that can remove deposits without stripping my hair is a winner.

I’m so confused by all the glowing reviews for this product on the Devacurl site. I was so excited to try it, but it has not met ANY of my expectations for a “buildup buster”. I’ve tried using it several times now, with the hope that I can make it work for me, but every time it fails: my hair is heavy and weighed down, greasy (especially the roots), stringy, zero body, and it takes forever to dry. Ironivally, it feels dirtier than ever, and I need something to washout the massive buildup this leaves behind. I massage it in and then spend ages trying to make sure it’s rinsed out, but nothing works. My hair is normally wavy in the drier months, very curly in the more humid months, thick, and with lots of natural body, for reference. Clearly, I’m the lone dissenter here (though there are other reviews outside this site with similar experiences), and I just don’t get it. There’s none of the “lightness” or “bounce” that others have described, and my curls are less defined than ever…flatter than flat. I love all my other DevaCurl products, which I use regularly, but I just can’t get behind this one. Going into the trash and will never be repurchased.
