   So I’m not sure if they discontinued this one or if what I have is the new version, but I couldn’t find a listing for Derma-E’s Sun Defense Mineral Sunscreen so I’m going to hope these are almost the same and review it here. The one I have contains 20% zinc oxide for sun protection. I don’t usually use it with makeup, because my makeup has spf in it, but if I go out on the porch to tan I’ll use this for my face. It’s pretty liquid, easy to apply, and doesn’t leave a white cast when rubbed in. I haven’t had any problems with irritation from it. It’s not as heavy or oily feeling as some sunscreens, and it doesn’t have too much of a smell. The only downside is that because it’s a thinner liquid, the bottle squirts our a lot if you’re not careful. Also, I used it on my boyfriend and it rubbed off and pilled a little bit on him, but that hasn’t happened when I’ve used it.

   Was a lifesaver when I started using this sunscreen over a year ago, but The formula seems to have altered slightly (again!?) and now it leaves a whiter cast irritates my eyelid skin, causing them to itch and swell. I am not sure what ingredient is causing this reaction, but it sure is making me sad. 🙁

   Only needed to try this twice to realize it was a huge no go!
   It pills so badly! I had to wash it off so that I could put my makeup on properly.
   Too bad because the ingredients are good. But its has to be able to function and this does not.

   Mrsminniver’s review says it all. Pills within 10-15 seconds of even starting to try to rub it in. Gets stuck in hairline (even when careful trying to avoid it) and impossible to work with. Everything else in her review is almost identical to my experience. It was only $18.99 USD on Amazon for an enormous tube (4 oz.) but a total waste of money. I was so hoping to love it, researched it and purchased based on the recommendation on beautyeditor.ca, due to its 20% zinc content. I even tried applying with just a tiny amount (sacrificing sun protection), to see if that would solve the pilling. Nope.

   I couldn’t even use it on my neck without pilling, and on my arms it was a disaster due to the fine hair on my arms (and I’m not hairy at all, I barely even have eyebrows).

   An utter disappointment. Do not understand the favourable reviews because this is the most unforgiving formula to hit the shelves. I have tried all sorts of ways to apply this sunscreen, before and after moisturising, on its own, with a spritz of Avene water, or with oil. This sunscreen just does not play well with others, or on its own! I know I have bought the real thing because I have checked with Derma E that I have bought it from an authorised online retailer. I cannot for the life of me understand how a product like this can make it to the shelves. You are only allowed several seconds to apply to skin, any longer than several seconds will result in pilling. Derma E, you have to revisit this formula. Idea’s great to have only zinc oxide (as I an allergic to titanium oxide) in the sunscreen. However, still a long way to go with the formula. Will be trying MooGoo next.

   I just ordered my second tube of this sunscreen. It’s been renamed Natural Mineral Sunscreen, but it’s the same formula as the Antioxidant Natural Sunscreen. I like this because it’s a mineral sunscreen instead of a chemical sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens irritate my sensitive skin. It’s also oil-free, silicone free and fragrance free. It doesn’t make me break out and goes on clear once it’s been blended well into the skin. It does take a little more effort to blend it, but the results are worth it. I’m also happy it has an spf of 30 and some antioxidants. Personally, I find it moisturizing enough to use without applying a moisturizer first, but if you have very dry skin you might want to use a light lotion before you apply this cream. Overall, Great Product!

   Let me stat by saying up until I found this product I HATED sunscreen. I avoided using it for years because I could never find a formula that worked for me, they were either too greasy and/or broke me out. Getting older coupled by the fact my father had a cancerous mole removed from the side of his face made me realize having to wear sunscreen was something I had to do.
   Because of the ingredients and the price I decided to try this…2 months later and to my delight it has not caused me to break out (fingers crossed)
   I like the fact that this is fragrance free, cruelty free and here in Canada is a decent price at about 20 bucks.
   It did take some trial and error to find the best way to apply this. I found applying it directly onto my face was a little drying and made my foundation cake.
   For me the best way is to put on my moisturizer, primer and mix some of this with my foundation on the back of my hand. It applies like a dream with a makeup sponge.
   I can see why some reviewers found the white cast to be offputting. This wasn’t an issue for me as I am the palest of the pale.
   I would repurchase this again and have recommended it to friends and coworkers.

   **I’m using the old formula with the old packaging**

   PROS:
   – mineral-based
   – has the best ingredient list: alcohol-free, fragrance free, oil-free, packed with anti-oxidants (green tea, vitamin c)
   – matte finish
   – accessible
   – cruelty-free

   CONS:
   – emphasizes my dry patches so I use some jojoba oil underneath it
   – leaves a heavy white cast
   – (I think, not sure though) it breaks me out into small bumps on my forehead due to the capric/caprylic triglyceride which is a coconut oil based product
   – does not work well under makeup

   Only reason why I would be repurchasing is because of how accessible it is to get in my country and there’s not a lot of mineral-based sunscreen offered here.

   I used to love this sunscreen. I have extremely sensitive, acne prone skin. Either it breaks me out or burns me. This was the only sunscreen that didn’t do either. They recently changed the formula to something extremely comedogenic.

    This is a pretty great product. I have sensitive, oily skin; chemical sunscreen ingredients break me out, and silicones make my face super greasy. I ordered this product from a local health food store after doing some research on good mineral sunscreens that aren’t loaded with silicones. I’m not disappointed!

    Pros:
    1. Price! It’s fairly cheap ($20ish in Canada). Better than the $40+ I was paying at Sephora.
    2. Finish. I have oily skin, but I’m on retinol and glycolic acid, so my skin is oily with dry bits. I find this sunscreen actually pretty hydrating when I first apply, but then it sets to a great matte finish. I wear a fairly heavy foundation, and this is a much better foundation base than pretty much any other primer I’ve tried. It keeps me matte for at least 6 hours, and my foundation goes on flawlessly.
    3. Doesn’t break me out, and my stupid face breaks out if you look at me the wrong way.
    3a. Doesn’t mess with my eyes. I rub this all over my eyes and sometimes get it into my eyes and it’s never caused any redness or sensitivity.
    4. Oil free
    5. Alcohol free
    6. Cruelty free 🙂

    Cons:
    1. White cast. This is no big deal, since it disappears once you rub it into your skin for a few seconds. I’m a medium olive skin tone, for reference.
    2. Flashback… Yeah, it’s pretty brutal. That’s what you get with zinc oxide though.
