Pros: Opaque, vivid color, shiny-wet look, doesn’t smear and leave lines with normal wear or if I rub my lips together (huuuuuuge plus with such a bright, opaque color), doesn’t feather, very buttery feeling, moisturizing, vanilla scent
Cons: If you don’t like fragrance, this smells like vanilla. If you’re afraid of transfer onto cups, etc., this will leave bright red marks on whatever it touches. My personal con is that the package doesn’t have the shade name printed on it or on a sticker. (edit+ I found the sticker, so this does come with one. It came off in my drawer.)
The applicator is great for precision. Just my two cents, but if you don’t want your lip color to transfer, gloss (especially vivid colored gloss) will not be something you can tolerate. My fiance avoids me like the plague when I wear gloss. He knows what’s going to happen – transfer. Nars, MAC, Lancome, Buxom, BareMinerals, Urban Decay, drugstore, etc., they all transfer – they’re glosses. Rating a gloss low for transfer is like rating a matte lipstick low because it’s matte. Anyway, I highly recommend this product if you want a vivid, shiny red that doesn’t leave streak marks on your lips. This is my favorite bright red.

Great lipgloss from MAC. The shade is a true red. However, for my neutral toned ( more to the cool side, I.e. pink undertoned) skin, I found Russian Red looked a bit too warm…the shade itself is very pretty though and by mixing / neutralizing the shade with a similar lip liner , the results were better…But… I tend to get lazy doing all that lol. So I also bought MAC lip glass in Ruby Woo which is a straight up cool toned red. Again, however, Ruby Woo lip glass was a tad too dark for me ( pigmentation was perfect though ) – I wear Ruby Woo for special occasions ( with minimal eye makeup– this colour packs a punch lol) . The lipstick in Ruby Woo is perfect but I don’t like the texture & drying effect; I prefer Ruby Woo lipliner above all mentioned here. Will not repurchase Russian Red. Wonderful colour, just not for me. Awesome staying power though. 4 lippies.

What I’ve been carrying around in my makeup bag…yup MAC RUSSIAN RED LIPGLASS which has perfect cool toned of vivid intense blusih red. At first glance, you may think this is a reddish orange but in fact, I love to call it a straight, simple pure red which contain no pinky or orangey tones. MAC Russian Red in the original matte is one of my all time favorites. It’s cult following virtually ensures it won’t be discontinued. Praise be. But it can be a tad drying so when I discovered they made a Lipglass version, I was intrigued. Late to the party for sure, but better late than never?
Full disclosure, this was my very first Lipglass ever. I’m 40 and have never been a fan of glosses. Ever. But I am a fan of MAC. Unfortunately, I have this weird thing about ‘wet’ looking lips; I know most people find a shimmery wet look the epitome of sexy but I never did. My 2,521 matte lippies will attest to that. So this gloss had to totally win me over…a tall order but I tried to remain open minded.
Formula wise, I find it VERY gloopy, sticky, tacky, gooey and ________ (insert synonym here).
I also found the vanilla scent/flavor (that all MAC lippies supposedly contain) to be far, far more potent than in their other formulas. I’m just sensitive to fragrance so I’m sure this is a non issue for most.
Application is easy enough with amazing, quick color pay off. But if you don’t know what you’re doing it can go messy but quick. As a matte fan I’m not accustomed to transference; this gloss, especially in a color as bright as this, seems to transfer to everything, and quickly too. Nature of the beast I suppose. Yet my mother wears NARS lipglosses and she doesn’t seem to experience the spread around or transfer so easily. Regardless, the first 2 hrs I wear this my lips feel so heavy. Plus, as I tend to wear dark red lips more in fall/winter, I HATE that no scarf, stray hair, gloved finger, drinking glass, etc., is safe. Not remotely.
The stain this provides after the gloopy shine has worn off is lovely. But…I’d rather just wear a stain right out of the gate. So to praise this for an effect that occurs two hours later seems misplaced. But at least, in some fashion, it’s truly long lasting (for a gloss).
But ultimately what earned my low rating was the color itself–the very reason I sought this out!! For whatever reason, in Lipglass form this isn’t a deep crimson red like the original formula, but, on me, a really bright poppy red. I like a more blood red lip rather than a Marilyn red. Waaay too bright for me and it’s odd since I assume the base is the same. It looks less crimson, more clownish. I also am confused over reviewers claiming this can go “sheer” and then be built up to a bolder color. Say what?! The initial swipe of this is pretty intense (even when applying gingerly) and building it up makes it go gooier but not much darker. Perhaps if you use a finger or a different applicator you can achieve a sheer red but that’s not worked for me.
Supposedly if you layer the Lipglass over the matching matte lipstick, you get an especially intense pigment and a sheen missing from the original. No thanks! That technique feels akin to applying 4 lbs of vaseline over Chapstick as an overnight treatment. I guess if I want to add a shimmer to a matte lip, which I don’t, I’d prefer to just add a less intensely gooey clear coat from another brand. I don’t feel like a “Russian” if layering this over the original formula–it just makes me look like Bozo at the strip club.
I hate when MAC lets me down. Clearly for these other reviews, it has its fans. I won’t give up on attempting to find another slightly less wet looking/less sticky red formula, but a gloss that doesn’t live up to its big sister formula makes another search less appealing. If my favorite brand can’t achieve it, I may be doomed

So, you want to wear red but feel like most reds look scary? This is red hot color that you can make as sheer or thick as you want. I tried it with a very light outline of Mac’s Brick liner and it was perfect. Better staying power than most glosses. So WHAT if it’s a little sticky? Its a gloss for cring out loud. I think glosses are especially wearable for women as they get older that want rich color without the age-enhancing effects that dryer lipstick formulas produce. I feel like the brunette from the Robin Thicke video (Blurred Lines) might be wearing this lipgloss….just a hunch 😉

Today I purchased this at my local family dollar store. Because, I was looking for cheaper version of MAC lipglass in russian red. As soon as I got out of my store, and into my car I compared the lipglass russian red to L.A. colors lip gloss in Red Alert. In the store it looked more yellow base then my mac lipglass. To my surprised when I swatched the two next each other and found them almost alike in color, in fact the L.A. color lip gloss had a more blue undertone then the russian red!
PROS OF LA COLORS LIP GLOSS IN RED ALERT

layer lightly on lips to slight cherry color with concealer underneath (this helps it last longer) to bright red.
CONS:
it has cheap sweet smell.
does not last as long as mac one, without lipliner

-HAS more of sheen, or shine for that classic red lip look.

For everyone out there who wondering whether you want to put the money out, try la colors first. Opposed to spending twenty dollars on color you feel makes you look clownish, or is too harsh.

Great pigmented, creamy, lip gloss. Very opaque, but can be sheered down when applied lightly. Can be worn on its own or over lipstick. Like all MAC lipglasses, it’s quite thick. Does not leave a stain behind.

I just bought this product today from Macy’s and I’m in love with this lip gloss. I’ve been searching for the perfect red that wasn’t too overpowering but yet still bold and this did it for me. It has a hint of gloss and is very pigmented which is a plus for me. I wanted a red lipstick originally, but I just didn’t care for their red lipsticks; they were too loud for me and plus you need a lip liner.The price factor does kinda suck considering that your only getting little product, but I’m still happy with my choice. I also had the same effect when it comes to the sticky-ness that other comments mentioned, but I personally like it that way so I know that the gloss is still on. The sticky-ness doesn’t bother me too much. It also doesn’t have a bad smell which is a plus. Overall I love this product and cannot wait to wear it.

I am absolutely terrified of red lipsticks but I love how it looks on others. I was determined to make the look work for me but after many failed attepts with various versions of red lipsticks I had almost given up. I saw this lipglass on cheapsmells.com so I thought what the heck I’ll give it a try.
I’m so glad I did. This is a gorgeous opaque red which isn’t as over powering or clownish as a red lipstick. You can make it as sheer or as strong as you like and it realy is a less ‘obvious’ alternative to a lipstick. I wear it over Mac’s Hue lipstick to get the best out of the colour.
For reference I have Platinum blonde hair and am a NW20
