Favorite gel, perfect for my 2C/3A wavy/curly hair. It defines and holds better than any other I’ve purchased. It is reasonably priced and easily available at Sally Beauty. The best thing about this gel is that it defines and holds but hair is soft, shiny, and touchable, when using this product; which is not usually the case for me when using gel. I typically find gel leaves my hair crunchy and hard. Trying to break a gel cast results in undefined waves/curls that are overly fluffy and not how I like my hair to be. Most surprising to me is the shine. Being a brunette I find my hair has less light reflecting qualities than fair-haired beauties however this gel gives my hair a glorious looking sheen to it. Almost as though I have used styling oil (which I typically only put on the ends if needed), and hard to achieve on wavy/curly hair.

This is a great gel, I am on the 2nd liter bottle for this summer!
ABOUT MY HAIR: Curly, 3C, prone to frizz, highlighted and high porosity.
HOW I USE IT: Cowash, Condition/deep condition, detangle, wrap my hair in a micro fiber for 5 minutes to remove excess water.
apply leave in conditioner, extra virgin olive oil AND THEN THIS GEL.
I work in small sections and use a Denman brush to increase curl definition help my curls clump together.
MY RESULTS: Defined, hydrated, bouncy, clumped, frizz-free curls with a very light cast.
I am able to go on to 2nd and sometimes 3rd day hair without re-touching as long as I cover my curls at night.
HOW I USE IT TO REFRESH: I mix equal parts leave-in, WATER, and this gel with a few drops of extra virgin olive oil, mix in a bowl and apply in small sections. Comb through with Denman brush.
I love this gel on day 1 and to refresh because it is a very slippery gel which means I am able to re-shape my curls while being very gentle. This is the only gel I have tried which doesn’t leave a dry/dehydrated feeling on my hair. It also doe not cayuse build-up on my hair. I can easily wash this out with a gentle conditioner which is my preference.
I too am a product junkie so it takes a lot to please me, let alone re-purchase a product.
This is most definitely a staple.
ADDED BONUS: It is Curly Girl Friendly if you’re into that!

This gel is definitely better for curly hair than most on the market and is worth a try. But it just doesn’t match the performance of Paul Mitchell’s styling glaze for me, which is a similar medium-hold gel at the same price point. Depending on the texture of your hair you may want to try both to see which one works better for you.
Pros:
– Provides some hold while remaining touch-ably soft
– Adds some shine
– Smells nice (not a heavy fragrance, more botanical)
– No build-up or flaking
– Dries quickly without much crunch
– Low price (I think I got a big bottle for $8)
– It’s WAY better than the Biolage Gelee it’s trying to mimic. Their formulas are different, and this one is far superior.
Cons:
– Doesn’t help with curl formation and can leave curls a bit limp (you need a strong curl pattern for this to work)
– This doesn’t leave much of a cast on the hair, so the hold level is very low. As a styling product, it almost leaves hair too soft.
– I was never able to revive 2nd day hair after using this, because it didn’t hold well enough. So I had to re-do my hair each time I used it.
– No real frizz control here. I noticed I couldn’t manipulate my hair after using the product without seeing frizz. Obviously this wouldn’t work for twist-outs. I didn’t get much chance to try this during a rainy or windy day, but I can imagine it not performing well.
So it was a worthy attempt, but I’m going back to PM’s styling glaze after this since I need more hold and curl definition.

Great gel! I’m a hair twin to the previous reviewer, and her review sums it up very well! This distributes very easily through my hair and gives great hold with no frizziness.

Update: as of August 2015, I am still loving and using this gel!
I like this gel so much I went back and bought the liter sized bottle. I am a product junkie and I jump around between salon brands and cheap drugstore stuff. I’m always wanting to try the new hot item, and so I rarely go out and buy back ups of stuff, but as I got down to the end of the bottle, I couldn’t stand the thought of running out of it!
I have medium-thick, naturally very curly (3b highlighter sized ringlets) hair that is smooth (as apposed to kinky/porous), prone to breakage, dryness & frizz.
I really like using gels scrunched into sopping wet hair to define my curls. I usually use a little leave in conditioner and this, and I get GREAT looking curls! They are shiny, smooth, frizz free. Moisture is locked in and the hold lasts all day. For me it usually isn’t crunchy, and I find that using a leave in really helps keep the crunch away. If it is crunchy then I just scrunch it out when dry, and it doesn’t flake off at all.
The gel is pretty liquidy as apposed to thick and gloopy like a lot of other gels. It is easy to smooth over the hair, but because it is runny, I find it best to work in small amounts or you risk losing a lot product from dripping out of your hands making a mess of the floor.
I am also impressed with how versatile it is. You see, I have so many products, and for gels I usually have 2 categories: light gels for air dry/good weather days & hard for diffusing/bad weather days. Amazingly, I can make this gel work both ways.
I love the smell of this! It smells soooo good, just like biolage stuff. If you don’t know what that smells like, it’s a typical clean/salon smell. I am addicted to it!
It not as cheap as, say, LA Looks (which I also really like) but I say it is fair priced for the amount of product you get. I like the clean look of it, but I wished it came in a pump like the cream does. I also have a few different Biotera products and because they are all packaged the same, it’s hard to tell them apart. I do like that it looks like a salon brand, and not like some cheap stuff.
If you find this to be too firm/hard then I suggest you try the styling glaze from Biotera. It is also very nice, but much lighter hold. I like to use it for touch ups.
In all, this is a great product! I think it is a great value & very high quality. It is also “CG Friendly” meaning it has no heavy silicone and is completely water-soulabe, so it works great if you do the whole “low-poo” (sls free) or “no-poo” (CO wash only) but I use it regardless.

like this stuff ….left my hair shiny and soft like no other! no crunchiness at all and i am used to using the famous kinky curly curling custard which although it worked, it didnt work as great as this product! i also used the leave in with this line . smells great makes my hair look great !

I’ve been using this on my 3b curly hair for the past 3 years and it is definitely an HG product for me. I came across it while looking for a cheaper alternative to Biolage’s styling glaze. This is very similar and actually works better on my hair than Biolage. I get great hold and frizz control without the crunch. It is also alcohol free which is an important factor for me. The smell is nice but not overpowering and I always get compliments on how good my hair smells, yet I don’t really smell it on me once my hair is dried. I might just be used to it after three years though!
Part of my success with this product also comes from the method I use for doing my hair. I use the plopping method found on naturally curly. I won’t get into it in detail on here but it involves applying product to soaking wet hair. The consistency of this gel is perfect for this method.

I bought this product when I was going through an “all natural, no silicones” phase. I have very curly hair, and it is super difficult to manage. This product leaves build up in my hair. I have very dark brown hair, and this actually made it look white in some areas – yuck! Definitely will NOT repurchase.

I’ve been using this for about 2 years now, and I can’t believe no one has reviewed it on MUA yet…I love this stuff. I found out about this as I was doing some research over on naturallycurly.com for some new styling products. I have dry, highlighted, naturally curly (2c/3a) hair and have problems with products either not providing enough hold to ward off frizzies or being so heavy that they weigh my curls down.
This gel provides the perfect amount of hold for me and doesn’t weigh down my curls; it’s one of my staple hair styling products. The gel itself is more like a glaze, it’s more of a thick liquid than a gel, and it doesn’t build up like creams and heavier products tend to do. My favorite way to use this is to scrunch it through my hair after applying a leave-in conditioner and PM Round Trip serum, and then letting my hair air dry. Have used it when I diffuse, too (but I actually prefer to use Biosilk Rock Hard gel if I’m going to use a blow dryer on my hair). This dries with little to no crunchiness, which I like if I’m going to air dry.
I buy this at Sally Beauty Supply, and I believe it comes in two different sizes. It’s very reasonably priced ($8-9 for a large bottle if I remember correctly). Also smells remarkably like Matrix’s Biolage line. I highly recommend giving this a try if, like me, you need decent hold without added weight.
