There is already a review section for this eyeshadow quad (I and one other reviewer posted our reviews there about 2 months ago), but I noticed this and the comments this reviewer (jmp24) made about the sponge tipped applicators. I wanted to tell her know (as someone told me) that the Chanel applicators are VERY different from those included with other eyeshadows (from drugstore up to Dior – believe me!). The Chanel ones are actually VERY GOOD. And while they have a foam or sponge “core”, they’re actually covered with a very thin, fine cotton or flannelette type fabric and they work amazingly well with Chanel’s shadows. Once I tried them, I really regretted having tossed those from earlier Chanel e/s purchases! Give these applicators a try; while they’re small and a bit fiddly to keep hold of, they work really well with Chanel’s e/s formula!

This quad is from the fall (or maybe winter) 2019 release. It’s $65 for 4 little pans of shadow, all shimmery – a soft champagne, a gorgeous light olive, a deep olive, and a deep slightly mauve chocolate brown.
I’ve looked at it several times in the store, and always passed because of the price. I haven’t bought Chanel eyeshadow since the early 90’s, I think it was a two color set, one shade a deep smokey black I used as a liner. I used it for years, likely way past the expiration date, until one day I dropped it and it shattered. I remember it was very pigmented and lasted until I washed it off…but since then, I’ve never splurged on any other Chanel shadows.
I’m glad I bought this one, and may even buy a backup, something I rarely do, the colors are just that gorgeous and so versatile. You can use a fingertip and just dab a little on your lids for some glow, or go all out. They are very soft and pigmented, but no fallout. The colors are unique, and the formula works really well on my lids, which are starting to get a little textured in the crease area. The lighter golden olive shade is just gorgeous as an all over lid shade, the darker shades great for lining or smudging along the lash lines. I’m actually really liking the champagne shade on the lid, with the light olive in the crease and outer corners, then line with the deeper shades. Just a gorgeous wash of color that isn’t too dark or overdone – perfect for daytime – though if you wanted to, you could do some really dramatic looks with these shades. I can also see myself using these colors with other shades/brands of shadow I have. The soft olive would be gorgeous with purples, deep blues or grays, even lighter shades of pink. The options are going to be fun to explore.
I have heard that the shadow formulas in this quad are superior to the other Chanel shadows. Not sure if this is true or not, and I can’t compare since I don’t own any – but if these shadows are the same as other Chanel shadows, I would consider buying more!
Yes, very expensive for 4 tiny shadows. The packaging and the design on the shadows is beautiful. The compact comes in a little velvet bag. The only strange thing is the two sponge tip applicators. What’s up with that? You don’t even see them on cheap drugstore shadows anymore. It’s not like they are some superb quality of sponge tip applicators or anything. I don’t get it. But YES, if I lost or dropped this – or maybe even just because it is limited edition, I would buy this again.
Edited to add:
After a few weeks, I picked this quad up to use it, and one of the shadows popped out of its little niche in the palette. I haven’t dropped it, I don’t even carry it with me in my makeup bag. It’s been on my bathroom countertop, in its “protective” velvet bag, since purchasing. Of course I’m amazed that such a pricey eyeshadow would do this…and was also amazed at the very wafer thin, dime thin, thickness of the actual shadow. Luckily, it didn’t break, so I was able to pop it back into place, but I took off a few lippies. And I think I’ve changed my mind about repurchasing.
