I use this differently than prescribed. It is both water and oil soluble. I use minuscule drops in my twice daily vitamin c serum that I mix also with the ordinary reveratrol + ferulic. It enhances other antioxidants. It is so diluted this way that it doesn’t irritate my skin. I know that they say it degrades in sunlight, but I wear sun protection and don’t go in the sun at all except like walking to my car. It is also not recommended to use alpha hydroxy acids (ie glycolic) in the morning but I do that too. I use it with one of the ordinary l ascorbic acid c products (+ resveratrol ferulic) in the am (water soluble) and the ordinary Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F (+ resveratrol) at night (fat soluble). I also use retin a every other night. I very much like this combo, along with acid exfoliation, peptides, sunscreen and plenty of moisture. I feel I can use all the antioxidant support I can get.
When I first got it I used it as prescribed. The very first time I used it after a long steamy bath and it burned me and even smelled like burnt flesh. However the way I use now is great no stinging no smell. It makes your face glow like a youthful angel of heaven and helps lines and pores too. Sometimes I dab extra on crow feet but not straight onto nasolabial folds plain because it does tingle there.

Didn’t see results. I used this on a weekly basis for a couple of months, and while it didn’t cause any adverse reactions, my skin didn’t improve in any way either. The product feels
like a light oil going on, then tingles and burns for a second, also causing a slight flush. It didn’t seem to irritate my skin though. I didn’t notice any improvement in skin texture (like I do after using AHA or BHA).

This really is good. It makes you look as if you eat tonnes of green vegetables and drink 2 litres of water every day. It is strong stuff. It does have an oily consistency, 3 drops covered my whole face easily. I have dry skin so I found it took 10 minutes to absorb before I put my moisturiser on top. My skin was dry, as usual, in the morning, but after I cleansed and moisturised my skin just glowed like a beacon. I would say it’s perfect for a special occasion, but you use so little in every application that the bottle will go off before it’s finished (6 months), so it’s best just to use it as regularly as it states. I only noticed the scent when I smelled my fingertips and only because other reviewers have made such a big deal about it. It didn’t really bother me, and I didn’t find it strong.

Recently, I’ve been exploring different options in the arena of acids. Glycolic and lactic. Which I got from both Roc products as well as Mad Hippie. After buying Mad Hippie’s Hydrating Nutrient Mist, I discovered Alpha Lipoic Acid. (It happens to be the last ingredient in MH HNM). I had been wanting to try out some of The Ordinary products. Initially, I wanted to try the Retinol 2%, but as I am still within my 12 week sample time with my Roc Deep Wrinkle Night cream, I opted instead for The Ordinary Alpha Lipoic Acid 5% Serum. My curiosity ran wild and I fell into what I call a google worm hole, in which lead to reading some interesting facts about Alpha Lipoic Acid.
First off, it’s supposed to be some powerful stuff. “400 times stronger than Vitamin C and E combined”. Wow. This, I had to see.
So, I was a bit nervous upon reading this. Yes, I do want this stuff to pack a punch. However, I don’t want to look like I stuck my head in an oven either. XD
Following the instructions, I waited until night time, as ALA is light sensitive. I place a couple of drops in my palm and pressed it into my face. Now, it should be noted that you should shake the bottle up to stop the ingredients from separating. Anyway, my face turned beet red for a couple of minutes and some intense tingling followed. Not painful just strong. Not irritating but definitely powerful. About 10 minutes later, I looked in the mirror and my skin was glowing. It really does look like you applied a retinol and vitamin c serum.
ALA is known to be helpful with regenerating damaged cells. I’m excited to see whether there is real truth to this. Either way, it’s very cool to find another product that shows immediate benefit. Will definitely buy again. Would suggest to tougher skin types, not sensitive. Will update once I’ve been using it for a longer period of time.

So, I’ve been using The Ordinary Alpha Lipoic Acid 5%, for 6 months,2- 3 times a week. One thing I can say for certain, is that my skin only had the reaction mentioned above, the first few times I used it and any time I went more than a week without using it. That is to say that your skin will adjust to this stuff.
My skin also continues to show textural and anti-aging benefits over time with use of TO ALA 🙂 Over the last month, I’ve started to layer this product with other products.. like Mad Hippie Exfoliating Serum. Then I top it off with moisturizer. TO ALA serum provides a glow and anti-aging benefits that not many can can compare to, especially in terms of price. However, when you pair it up with something else that works equally well… it becomes pretty mind-blowing.
I like this stuff. It’s effective. It’s cheap. It works.

I am a bit on the fence with his product. I seem to love most the water-based formulas of this brand.
The oil based – like this one, act strange.
Of course, it is VERY strong and I never use it more than twice a week, and in the evening, as per their instructions.
It is true that the morning after I wake up with super soft skin (but any AHA-BHA glycolic serum would give me the same result).
I hate the smell (it stinks!!) and it’s super oliy, it does not get absorbed, at all (are you planning to use that in the morning? …forget it).
I have to wait hours – literally – before it gets ito the skin, and then need to apply a moisturizer (because this is an acid, and even if it is so oily, it will not moisturize). I really hate the greasiness of this product.
As I said, i much prefer water-based formulas.
I will keep on using just due to the very reasonable price and absence of fillers (these are no-frills formuals, they just put in the active ingredients and full stop), but it’s not my favourite serum.
I consider it rather like medication, that you must take but it’s not that pleasant.

High hopes for this but it gave me HIVES and itchy bumps all over my face, even after diluting with another product. I believe I have an issue with most Ordinary products due to their use of propanediol- which is a good alternative to regular water but is known to cause allergic dermatitis in concentration over 75%. This is obviously 95% propanediol.

I’ve been using this product for about 3 months, twice a week. I apply 3 drops after my toner and before moisturiser. I bought this as my skin can sometimes appear dull.
I have had good results with this serum. However, it stings every time I apply it and turns my face red hot. For this reason, I worry that it isn’t good for my skin in the long run, and I probably won’t repurchase it.
The price, like all TO products, is very cheap. The packaging is appropriate, a dropper bottle. The serum is light but has an oily finish.

The Alpha Lipoic Acid 5% is probably one of The Ordinary’s most immediately gratifying products in terms of visible results, behind only the AHA 30% + BHA 2%.
ALA (thioctic acid) doesn’t pack the burn that AHAs do and isn’t as sensitive regarding pH environment. Due to concentration, TO still earns the product may cause sensitivity of overused—I’ve never experienced this (even when combined with direct acids and other potent actives), but those with sensitive or sensitized skin are best off patch testing.
For those who can tolerate the formula, TO suggests limited use. I do think (but I’m not a professional!) it’s likely safe to add a drop to a daily antioxidant serum or moisturizer on a more regular basis, as doing so significantly dilutes the 5% concentration. Just remember (though I’m sure you already do) a broad spectrum sunscreen, as ALA is both photosensitive and photosensitizing. Oilier-skinned users may want to stick to nighttime use only given the product’s texture, which is mildly oily (despite being oil-free) due to a waterless formulation.
The ALA serum comes in one of TO’s tinted droppers for the purpose of sun protection, which is standard but also less preferable than an airtight container. I prefer to keep it in a drawer to further protect from ambient light.
I experienced noticeable brightening of the complexion after first use, more than I’ve ever noticed from any other product from The Ordinary—even the 30%+2%, though there isn’t comparable smoothing—and any ascorbic acid product. Used regularly (1–2x/week) going forward, I’ve found the product helps maintain this gain in combination with the rest of my regimen. Understandably, further uses haven’t resulted in equally noticeable changes (though they could depending on skin condition). Aside from brightening, ALA scavenges reactive oxygen species, meaning it serves a useful and long-term purpose even if it’s not immediately evident.
As others have mentioned, the product does have a distinctive, burnt smell that fades as other products are layered over. (Despite the oily feel, I prefer to apply the product early in my routine, after the lightest water-based serums.) It also seems unlikely a typical user will finish a full 30ml in the recommended time frame if following usage guidelines, taking oxidation concerns into consideration. That said, these are small complaints from the consumer end for a sub-$7 product.

I hated this serum with a passion at first fro the first two months because of the burning rubber smell and no matter how much I apply, I didn’t seem to get any visible results. One day I realized this can be diluted with other face oils so I mixed three drops of this and three drops of rosehip seed oil. This has almost eliminated the burning rubber smell and I’ve had visible results the next day. I don’t know what it is about the rosehip seed oil with this serum but this just seems to work!

Over the last couple of months, I’ve bought some The Ordinary products to try.
If I had to choose my favourite product (so far), it would be the Alpha Lipoic Acid.
The second best is the Natural moisturising factors cream – since it is so basic and versatile.
I have not tried to use these two together yet, though.
I use the Alpha Lipoic Acid at most twice a week and it gives my face a brighter (less dull), glowy look.
I use it at night – 3 drops over my face that has been already been moisturised with Boots Botanics Organic face oil. I have sensitive skin and even though I used the Alpha Lipoic acid over oil, I still could feel it warming up on my face and tingling slightly. This goes away in around 2-3 minutes. It doesn’t smell fantastic to me – smells like gasoline, but the smell goes away when the warming sensation goes away.
If I want quick results – nice glowy skin, I’ll reach for the Alpha Lipoic acid.
It’s easy to use – no 10-step Korean regime. Just Alpha Lipoic acid paired with my facial oil. It’s fuss-free.
I’ve tried other products such as the Niacinamide, Alpha Arbutin, L-Ascorbic powder, and even Vitamin C 23%, but they all take some time to show good effects – around 2-3 weeks for me.
I think this bottle will last a long time, since I’ll use 6 drops if I use it twice a week.
Remember there is a label which informed that this item is good for use, when opened, for 6 months.
