The first perfume by this house, Gold is a definite salute to the gilded age of perfumes – or the rule of the civet if you like. Whether people like that kind of stuff or not is another issue and is very context-bound, but the complexity of those fragrances is something very different and respectable in my book. Amouage Gold has that complexity and characteristics of those days, too. Of course they are not using real civet, today and I’m very happy for this. Anyway, it opens with a strong hiss of not-so-clinical or clean aldehydes. These open up to a pretty and elegant white florals, somehow even friendly and whimsical. LOTV often smells like gas on me, but not here. It is not fully green, either. A pretty flower without any intoxicating syrup or heady stuff. The rose is not jammy, either. The base and the general characteristic is that glamorous, luxurious hiss and purr. My decant has aged in years and has become a balmy fragrance with lots of sandalwood and myrrh, which I quite like. Would I commit to a full bottle of Amouage Gold? No. This is because more and more houses have started go in this direction, the mainstream market does not consist of pink berries only and I like the more modern versions of these kinds of hissy purry perfumes. I am a big fan of Bottega Veneta Knot Eau Absolue in that regard, and to me Amouage Gold does not compare. There are also discontinued or vintage perfumes that give the same feel – Givenchy III, and Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds offers the same feel at a fraction of the price. If I was madly in love with Gold, I would not consider these as rivals perhaps but they do satisify my general craving. Still, a quality luxury fragrance that can be someone’s signature.

I brought this in Kuwait in 2008 at the airport and could not believe how lovely it smells on my skin. I wear this at night in fall, spring and summer months because it is too heavy for the day time and it has different scented levels and last in the morning. I get a lot of compliments from men who notice a very different fragrance. This product is sold on the internet, certain fragrance stores and certain department stores. This is a very pricy product that still last me all of these years because I only wear it on special occasions.

Edit: maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but suddenly aldehydic florals don’t smell so bad to me anymore. a cross between Caleche and Chamade. A little less dusky than Caleche, a little softer and less pollinated powdery than CHamade. More opulent than Caleche. Not as bubbly as Dia.

There are so many other well blended aldehydic floral compositions of very good quality – for a much better price. If I had to pick a specific fragrance that reminds me of Gold, I would choose Este Lauder Beautiful (the orginal 1986 perfume in a molded, relatively flat glass bottle with a white rose stopper that lists as it’s ingredients SD Alcohol 39-C, Beautiful perfume, Purified Water). I believe the original 1986 ingredients include rose, jasmine, LOTV, marigold, iris, frankincense, vetiver, sandalwood and myrrh. Since I am not a fan of aldehydic floral blends, I personally would allocate the money on another fragrance, but I can see how if you love chanel 5, that this is a gentler, easier, consider, more modern rendition.
Note: I am a vintage perfume lover. I thought to compare Gold with Avon Charisma 1968. Amouage gold is creamier, smoother, far less green, more sweet and refined, and much more modern and expensive than Charisma. However, on my skin, a dab of the sharper, greener Charisma does mellow considerably in 15-20 minutes. Since Charisma is available on line in a very adorable glass snail bottle for approximately 10 usd for possibly 15-20 ml, including shipping, I wanted to mention it as an option especially if you like Gold but want more of a bite.

I am now 53 years old. My life has been an exciting tale I of wealth and hardscrabble … Sin and redemption….trials and victories… Physical tests and triumphs….overflowing love and tremendous heart break ….I am now enough to wear Gold and blessed to be able to afford it. It’s the most beautiful perfume in my discovered world. Thank you Robert Guy and thank you Amouage and thank you Jesus .

Rumour has it that when Coco Chanel asked the perfume designer Ernest Beaux to create what would become the iconic no.5, her brief was: “I want a perfume that smells like a woman”. The idea of a perfume smelling like a woman struck me (no.5 certainly does the trick), and it’s memory was instantly prompted when I first tested Amouage Gold. To me, Gold smells… womanly, and expensive, and timeless in the best possible way.
But what does a woman smell like?
Well, in my mind she doesn’t smell of cheap pear shampoo, of red fruit crumble or candy floss, and I’m positive her trail will NOT remind you of Laundromats.
My ideal woman smells clean and polished, but also warm and inviting. You feel the warmth of soft skin, behind an abstract cleanliness, and you perceive a feminine trail of fresh flowers, warmed by a golden ray of afternoon sun.
Indeed, Gold opens with a soapy and clean burst of aldehydes, rendered happy by hints of citrus and peach skin, and shining over a radiating floral heart. The fragrance rests over a warm, soft base of light ambery woodiness, which loves your skin and blends seamlessly into it. Gold is a perfume I instinctively associate to a smiling, beautiful, elegant woman. She might be the beautified and chic version of ourselves, but she is not unattainable. She has an encouraging look in her eyes as she seems to say: try!
The fragrance, like most aldehydic floral perfumes – and like all Amouage fragrances!, is diffusive and full of presence, so you might want to be careful with the application. I personally apply just one spray, and instantly feel impeccable and confident and beautiful – and not overwhelmed. My husband’s unprecedented volunteered opinion: “hmm… you smell so womanly and sexy!!!”(Exactly how I feel wearing Gold!;)) (Of course if you over-spray it, you’ll have every male, female and animal avoid you for at least an hour, or until the shimmering and diffusive aldehydes subside!)
Without being a dupe, Gold bears many, many similarities with Chanel no.5. If you like this style of perfumes there are many offerings out there at every price point (Caleche, no.22, Infini by Caron, Madame Rochas, Vega, Liu)**, since once upon a time this style was very popular, thanks to the driving success of no.5…
However, many of the classic formulations have been cheapened over the years, so I think that Gold is among the best balanced aldehydic florals you can find on the market today (but it’s also among the most expensive), with a stunningly beautiful, skin loving base. It fulfills 100% the rule by which its composer, Guy Robert, worked: “a perfume should above all smell good”.
The notes are not very representative of this abstract fragrance (and certainly there are both roses and citrus in the composition), but here’s the official list:
Top notes: rose, lily of the valley, frankincense.
Heart notes: myrrh, orris, jasmine.
Base notes: ambergris, civet, musk, cedarwood, sandalwood.
**If you are looking for perfumes in this genre but with a modern twist, I suggest you try Frederic Malle’s more melancholic “Iris poudre” and “Une fleur de cassie”, as well as Serge Lutens’ austere “La Myrrhe”. They are also *slightly* cheaper than Gold and have a very distinctive character.

My first sampling was a couple of years back from an official spray sample of about 2mls. I hated it. I think the sample was off. It was huge and sour with lily of the valley so I washed it off. I re tried this again duty free and it was a different fragrance. Aldehydic floral with a woody dry down .As Chanel no 5 quality has somewhat thinned in recent times and changed ( the parfum extrait has changed in about 2011 – more like the EDP now ) I have looked for a replacement and this is it or so I thought.
Yes there are similarities to No 5 and also to Caleche ( the woodiness ) but I have come to the conclusion that Gold is really a chypre – like Jubilation 25 but not such a heavy hitter. Jubilation 25 and Gold Woman share something – though I cannot place what.
Anyhow I think Gold is closer to an classic chypre ( yes there is a connection to Mitsouko – not the new version ) – smooth warm ,golden with a rose jasmine heart and labdanum and treemoss in the drydown . ( Treemoss is listed as an ingredient on the label on the box . ) So I bought Gold Woman and I love it . It is not No. 5 . No 5 is still very unique with it’s ” icey ‘ core . Gold Woman is warmer. It really does remind me also of how smooth Mitsouko used to be.
I gave the price a 4 ( approx $355 per 100 ml after tax ) because Clive Christian’s No 1 EDP spray for 50 mls is twice the price for half the amount.

If you like Chanel No. 5 and all those other sharp, white florals, you’ll like this. Ugh.
panickyMare2
Where do you buy it from? Apparently it’s discontinued.

I love this scent. I can’t explain it, but I love it! Sadly it doesn’t last on me all day, but when I first apply it, it has a unique smell to it! With my chemistry it ends up smelling weaker and almost watered down by the end of the day, but I love the initial smell so much, that I can’t stop wearing it!
forsakenBuzzard7
I was dreaming about this one for a long time before I actually bought it. Usually I get obsessed with a tester and then buy it and realize it doesn’t smell that great on me after all.
But not this one. This one I wear every day except on special occasions when I wear Coco Mademoiselle.
Like others have said, it is a sexy scent. But I feel like I can get away with wearing it for everyday because it also has some sweetness to it, in the fruit. Which I think makes it youthful.
I get the most compliments with this one. Not like “oh you smell nice” but like “dang girl, you smell gooood!”

Guess Gold has been described as “a fruity oriental fragrance with top notes of citrus, golden apple, and pineapple; a heart hyacinth, pink pepper, water lily, jasmine, and rose with a base of vanilla, musk, sandalwood, patchoul, honey, and amber.” The base notes of amber, sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli dominate on me, with a hint of apple and pineapple on top. A “sexy” fragrance, similar to Coco Mlle, Flowerbomb, Sensual Amber.
vengefulGnu7
The smell is strong, but it smells good. It’s very sexy. It was given to me as a gift but I was surprised I liked it. It is not my signature fragrance (haven’t found it yet) but it does stay well and smell very nice by the end of the day.

I LOVE this perfume.
My bestfriend gave this to me as a Christmas present.
I was soo obsessed with it when I got it.
I wear it almost everyday!
I try not too, but because I feel like I’m wasting it cause i spray myself with it like 5 times. LOL.
I can’t get enough!
It’s almost like a night-time, go to a party perfume.
Almost like a really sexy perfume. with kinda a musky scent, with vanilla.
my friends love it! even my guy friends love it.
1-10, it’s like 12.
amazing.
somberWhiting5
This is my favorite fragrance.
It smells so good on, and it’s not too strong.
It’s my signature scent, and I get compliments a lot.
I love the package of it. It’s also very inexpensive for a perfume.

I love the perfume bottle, it’s gold with a black cap. The reason I bought this fragrance is because I was told it smelled like a fresh cut Lily. While it does have a lily note it is proceeded by this rancid grass scent that throws the whole thing for me. Might pass it along to my sister or something, because this definitely does not agree with my chemistry.

What a beautiful masterpiece this is!
It caresses the skin with molten gold nectar
and meaty Casablanca lilies. I am totally
blown away by its heady, rich array of notes.
I get more lily than jasmine and just enough pepper to
lift it out of the ordinary. There is a slight damp, vegetal
note that I also smelled in Cacharel’s Eden and it makes
the EDP more grounded and earthy.
I think lily lovers will lap this up!
Amazing sillage and staying power. The bottle is unique
and suits the scent so well.

I love love love this rich, ambered lily. There’s simply nothing else out there that’s like it. It’s strong, a little fetid around the edges, like real tropical jungles. It’s slightly animalic and only a tiny bit sweet. My first go-round with Gold was not good. It was just too weird, too strong. But over time, I started craving it. When I heard it was discontinued, I bought a few bottles. I strongly prefer the EdP to the EdT, and the bottle is much more fun, too. Lilies and amber, who would have thought?? I think it’s genius.

Ummm, it’s getting better than the beginning, but…eeeeee…no…not for me. The top notes seem to smell of plastic and leather (ack- leather doesn’t smell good to me!), but it dries down to eventually day lillies with a leather/plastic undertones. I’ll try it again in a few days and see if the smell seems better on me then.

I you love the smell of lilies, you will love this much underated lovely. I really liked te lily notes in Vanilla Galante but flound it much too fleeting on my skin. DKG is a stayer. It is quite a heavy hitter so careful not to overspray, but the amber in the drydown is warm and lovely. However the Casablanca lillies are the star imo and make this a truly beautiful scent. Sometimes, I just want something simply pretty and Gold is just that.

I just purchae sed Gold from Ebay for cheap. I probably would not have bought it for full price, although I am generally pleased with DKNY perfumes (I love Cashmere Mist). First, you have to love the smell of lilies. If you don’t, this fragance is not for you. It is lily, lily and more lily. However, after ten minutes it really softens and you can smell the other notes. It is definitely a winter fragrance for me. It is somewhat spicy even with the lily notes. This perfume has great sillage and lasts forever. I have been looking for a perfume with good lasting power (don’t even get me started on how much money i have spent on high end perfumes that last an hour). I could smell it the next morning on my clothes. Gold is a great going out perfume since it is a little heavy for work and definitely lingers. I don’t care for the bottle. It is not as pretty in person as it is in the ads. Overall, I will definitely wear this and it is different from anything else I own.

(EDP) Best unsniffed buy, ever. I ordered a bottle of this based on notes. I love the smell of Casablanca lilies, reminds me of my most recent wedding day because I carried a bouquet of them. This is mainly lily, though I do get the edge of clove and pollen at the start. It definitely does last! My skin is a true test of that, and Gold goes the distance. I get no sweetness at all, just fresh, true Casablanca Lily. Great, great scent. I will repurchase. I will!

Meh. On me, this is very sharp and vetiver-ish. Like Mitsouko EDT only bad. This doesn’t exactly stink, but it’s not something that I would really wear again. It also bothered my nose…I couldn’t wait for it to fade so I would stop sniffling. I know others like this, but I’m just not a fan.

To be completed… (have written it but need to revise before posting)
Women:
Tester insert says: “This powerful floral fragrance is made for the most special, luxurious, evening occassion, rich in sophistication and splendour.”
Men:
Tester insert says: “This rich floral fragrance is made for the most special evening ocassion – rich in splendour and sophistication.”

Beautiful, smooth, rich floral animalic. Moderate sillage, good lasting power. Very classy, formal and actually impecable. In spite of what others say and do, I wear my perfumes to my own taste and wouldn’t relegate this to black tie affairs, I wear it anytime at all. It’s beautiful and makes me happy (my pocketbook not so much!) At these prices you should always try before you buy, but I can’t imagine anyone who is serious about perfume not falling madly in love with this. Oozes quality. Love!
