Some perfumes in Les absolus series are remakings of prior fragrances with a couple of tweaks here and there, and Bois Mystérieux is apparently a remake of Songe d’un Bois d’Ete. I have never smellt that one, so I cannot comment on how the two compare. I think all bottles in Les Absolus series open with a strong blast of whatever the theme is and then calm down and become rather wearable versions of their respective fragrance families – with lots of projection and often with remarkable lasting power though. Bois Mystérieux is not an exception in the first sense. It opens up with a blast of woods and spices as if Guerlain were saying “Hey, see how we have bought all the woods and spices on the planet and we are throwing them at your face in a not-so-mysterious fashion.” This is quite pleasant and almost experimental when compared to fragrances in department stores nowadays. I think I will always remember the woodsiness of those first notes, and they were quite pleasant, too. Dry dry dry woods and spices. I then notice something very green, laurel and I think it is an exciting note actually. There is something medicinal in these notes – but balanced with a Guerlain softness- that I quite enjoy. I don’t know why but I cannot stop thinking about the famous Guerlinade base even when it is obviously not there. Florals do not show up much on my skin, but there is a nicely fragrant, aromatic side to woods and spices and that’s how understand they are there. Still, this is a mostly cedar perfume on my skin. What I like about this cedar is the slightly airy, slightly balmy myrhh that accompanies it and offers a creamy sensation at the base. This aspect is paired with cumin and slightly dirty leather notes, too. Cumin is a difficult note for me, and many people smell BO in it. I personally did not get any BO – though I have no idea how this would work in hot weather- and quite enjoyed cumin here. I like Bois Mystérieux as an olfactory experience but do not love it enough to buy a bottle and use it on myself. Probably not a very revolutionary scent from the perspective of masculine woodsy fragrances but it was good to try it.
