I had tried proactiv several times before but experienced irritation. I’m now 30 and probably as a result of stopping birth control, stress, dietary changes, etc., the cystic acne I first had in my mid 20s had returned with a vengeance. My boyfriend swears by BP and after 6 months of trying everything from Alpha Hydrox, Paula’s Choice, Clinique, Boscia, Dennis Gross, Clarisonic, neutrogena, aveeno, etc., and not wanting to go back to a dermatologist, I finally agreed to try BP again. Found this at Target and read the good reviews (of this, Equate’s version, and Proactiv–all of which are identical). Decided to try it since I’m at the end of my rope.
I’ve been using the whole system twice a day for a week. Nothing drastic happened overnight, but my existing acne is clearing and 5/8 of the inflamed cysts I had on my face are gone (still left red marks, but those are starting to fade a little). Today I wore no foundation (concealer and powder only), and it feels great.
Got a little dryness where I applied the BP step 3 (I only apply it to spots and breakout prone areas, and I let it sink in for 5 minutes before putting anything over it). I learned the cleanser also works better when left on for a minute or two, which can contribute to the dryness. The big difference this time in why I think the flakiness has been only slight and temporary (and redness has been totally absent) is because I’m also using Cerave PM, AM, and eye cream with it. Keeping my skin hydrated has helped it heal and prevented the irritation I got when I used proactiv by itself several years ago.
This whole system plus Cerave is cheap, alcohol free, and non irritating. It works…slowly but definitely works. I keep feeling the urge to add other powerful anti aging products but am afraid to mess with the balance. Plus, the glycolic acid and witch hazel in this toner, along with the niacinimide, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid in Cerave products are pretty well researched and highly recommended ingredients for keeping skin healthy and plump. Maybe those miracle products I am always drawn to are actually unnecessary…being a woman of science, I can appreciate why a basic, no nonsense, evidence based approach would work better than any $85 peel or serum.
The packaging could be a little better (step 3 bottle gets stopped up and the other two steps are just over the 3 oz travel limit), but for $14, I’ll deal with it.
Also, neither proactiv nor Up & Up test on animals, and that is more and more important to me these days.
I can pick this up locally instead of waiting on a subscription or order from PC or Proactiv. Lastly, many other BP products actually include comedogenic ingredients (laureth 4, heavy waxes, etc.), but not this system…this means those annoying zits that sometimes pop up around where you put spot treatment do not occur with this system.
Once the current breakouts are totally gone I’ll probably only use step 3 as a spot treatment since I’m still not convinced leaving it on skin all the time isn’t somewhat harsh and possibly damaging (plus the whole bleaching effect on sheets), but the cleanser stays because it doesn’t stay on long. The toner seems to help with hydration and smoothness, as well as removing makeup left on after cleansing. So it stays. All in all, I don’t see why I’d need anything else besides this system and my beloved Cerave moisturizers and sunscreens.
A plus overall!
—update 2/25: ok, I couldn’t help it; I added some anti-aging products. Still using the cleanser (twice a day, leaving it on for a minute or two), and the step 3 as a spot treatment for this one dwindling blemish I have left over, but since the glycolic acid in the toner was working but nothing miraculous, I added Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel pads (1-2 times daily) and Alpha Hydrox Retinol ResQ at night (before Cerave eye cream and PM moisturizer). This is kicking it up a notch—smooth, glowy skin that only needs concealer. I’d still buy the Target 3-step system for steps 1 and 3, though. Just needed a stronger exfoliant.
—update 4/13/14 back to a simple routine. Another expensive bout with PC and multiple returns. Should have known better. The bp cleansers do dry me out, so I’ve switched to Cerave foaming or Boots gentle foaming cleanser, Cerave AM, PM, and eye cream, Up and Up spot treatment 10% bp! and maybe an occasional mask.
Realized there is cyclops…aka cyclopentasiloxane…in this Bp (in the 3 step), and that stuff causes the dreaded little bumps on my chin, so I’m avoiding this system for now. Good for breakouts though. The BP cleanser is drying…they all are, not just this brand. But I’ll keep it around for nasty breakouts.

I started using this about 6 weeks ago..so glad I purchased! I have never used proactive but I am so impressed with this. Within less than 3 days my existing acne had dramatically cleared, even my super stubborn spots. I’ve used benzoyl peroxide and glycolic acid (the active ingredients in kit) before but never did anything for my acne like these do, I love the toner, it’s unlike any toner I’ve used. It has a thicker consistancy, and feels like it conditions your skin while exfoliating. It’s made all my other acne products obsolete! at first I thought the bottles would be too small for 2month supply but so far there’s plenty left. Only downfall for me is I can’t use all 3 at same time, which would make it more effective since benzoyl peroxide can be harsh, so may or may not repurchase for that. I’m trying acnefree sensitive next but for now just glad this is working! one tip with this…I wouldn’t recommend using the cleanser for the eye area, I’ve been using another cleanser for makeup removal. The cleanser is great, just can dry and irritate delicate eye area.

OMG!! This is the best acne care system I’ve found to date. Cleanser only has 2.5% bp, which is the least drying. Repairing treatment is also 2.5% BP & has a wonderfully smooth consistency. Toner has glycolic acid in it which is great for maintaing moisture balance in skin. I love this kit, & it keeps my skin free of acne, has great scent, is not drying, is great value at only $15.99/kit which has lasted me >2months. I hope this system is never ever discontinued.
Thank you target
