I have been waiting upon this item since it appeared online on Sephora – and since I don’t usually do online purchases, I kept on waiting while looking on the internet for scarce swatches. Eventually, I gave in and ordered two. Only to go into Sephora and see all the colours in stock.
The colour range goes from pale orange, bright pinks, and the typical reds, with some muted neutrals/mauves. My favourites for the neutral, your lips but better, are 412 Rose Mix.
I have only tested out the longevity for 411, Rhythm Red, a bright warm orange red. The formula is “cushy”. It is less sticky than it’s glossy counterpart (The Glossy Stain.) However, it is not matte by any means. The colour does not sink into my fine lines (A la Shu Uemura Lacque), and if anything, this stains much more than the Glossy Stains ever did.
I feel the Glossy Stains had a distinct texture, a tacky layer that was essentially that – a layer on your lips. Therefore, it never really stained, but had a very long lasting effect that could go on for hours throughout the day.
With the Vinyl Creams, they go on semi-glossy, and eventually turn into a creamy stain that is not drying. Although the texture does not turn matte, it does set and it does not transfer onto your finger/teeth unless you are really trying and putting pressure on.
Not all colours are friendly across the board. If you have pigmented lips, I would stay away from some of the lighter colours, as I tried 408 and it ended up being a milky, patchy mess.
I adore the packaging, and the texture. However, I have a feeling that I may also be extremely biased. The Glossy Stains are my favourite lip product for the past 3 years and I have many in my arsenal, as many that I have finished up.
These are a more work friendly alternative than the glossy stains in my opinion. I will be picking up more. (And the black on black packaging doesn’t help curb my cravings at all.)
The biggest con would be the price. at $42CAD, I could honestly get a new foundation. It has 5.5ml of product. The only way I can justify this for myself is that I actually use these YSL lip products daily.
